According to the article "IVF patients turning to Chinese medicine" published in CTV News :
"A new study on infertility reveals that many couples are now turning to Eastern medicine -- along with Western medicine -- for help to #conceive.
For months Michelle Simpson and her husband tried to become parents -- but getting pregnant wasn't easy -- so they turned to in vitro fertilization or IVF.
"I think given my age I really did feel that my time was probably limited."
But after two unsuccessful attempts, Michelle decided to include a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicines with her third try at IVF.
It worked -- she became #pregnant with twins.
"I think it really complimented the IVF and I felt a lot more healthy and in balance."
A recent study shows women who undergo acupuncture with their IVF treatments -- increased their chance of getting pregnant by 10 to 65 percent.
It's been shown to reduce the effects of stress which is important because some of the stress hormones, in particular prolactin and cortisol. Prolactin can interfere with ovulation, cortisol can interfere with implantation.
Dr. Lorne Brown says acupuncture can help regulate the menstrual cycle, increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, and help embryo transfer during IVF.
"The literature is showing the acupuncture not only increases the pregnancy rate but increases the live birth rate."
Infertility specialist Dr. Beth Taylor says while more patients are seeking acupuncture to support IVF, it may not be for everyone."
"Women that might benefit are those where there's a significant #stress or mental health component to their #infertility."
Since it can be a highly emotional time for couples who're trying to get pregnant, any help with reducing #anxiety can only be beneficial"
